If you’ve ever tried to look up VA benefits as a dependent, you already know: the information can be overwhelming. There are forms, rules, acronyms—and half the time, no one gives you a straight answer.
That’s why I always start here: you may qualify for more than you think.
But you’ve got to know where to look—and what to ask for.
Here are a few key areas where dependents often qualify for support:
1. Healthcare (CHAMPVA)
If the veteran is permanently and totally disabled (100% P&T), spouses and children may be eligible for VA-provided healthcare under CHAMPVA.
2. Education & Training
Programs like the Fry Scholarship or DEA (Chapter 35) can help cover tuition, housing, books, and fees. More on this in the next article.
3. Financial Aid
Some dependents may qualify for additional allowances if the veteran receives a VA pension or certain types of compensation. It’s not automatic—so don’t miss the paperwork.
4. Burial & Memorial Benefits
VA can help cover funeral costs and memorial items in some cases. Eligibility depends on the veteran’s service and benefit status.
The first step? Check the veteran’s rating and service connection status.
That usually determines what opens up for you.
The second step? Talk to a Veteran Service Officer (VSO).
They can help you apply correctly—and avoid delays that come from missing documentation or using the wrong form.
You don’t have to guess your way through this. Let’s take it one benefit at a time—and make sure nothing gets left on the table.
